Gernot makes a fantastic Rudolf, and Mark’s one cool Death (I wasn’t sure whether I should call the character “Death” or just stick with “Tod” :-P).

(I always find it a little odd, personally, when people talk about “der Tod” in English because it’s not a personal name or anything, it gets translated in every language the musical is performed in, so it makes sense to translate it when talking about it in English, too. I don’t speak of “der Tod” when I talk about the musical in Finnish either, I talk about “Kuolema” because that’s what he’s called in Finnish.)
My thoughts exactly. Also, to me, placing German words in English feels quite awkward to me, so I prefer to refer to the character as Death.
In Polish situation is different mostly because, as oppose to German or English, in Polish the word “śmierć” is feminine.
*grins* Oh yeah, that would change it. It’s practical to have a gender-neutral language…
I agree, I’m not a fan of placing German words (or foreign words in general) in English unless there’s a good reason, like there not being a corresponding word in English. This is way off topic, but it drives me mad when fiction writers think they can “add local colour” by making characters constantly utter foreign words amid their English dialogue.

One funny thing: our English Literature teacher once told us, that because of this the translators had a huge problem when they wanted to translate Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death”… ;-P
Ahh yes… that’s the biggest problem I have with many fan fic writers. I don’t mind if a word’s used once or twice, but when it’s being used all the time it’s feels awful. And it’s not only a problem with German: for example fans of japanese anime/manga tend to abuse Japanese in their fan works in a similar fashion…
